Brexit – Minister Gentiloni meets Barnier: take into account the acquired rights of Italian citizens in the UK

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, received this morning at the Farnesina the European Commission’s Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier.

The meeting, within the Chief Negotiator’s tour of the major European capitals, was aimed at establishing a first direct contact in preparing for the negotiation for the United Kingdom’s exit from the Union.

Minister Gentiloni confirmed Italy’s support for the Commission’s primary role in preparing and conducting the future negotiations and reiterated Italy’s full alignment with the principle set forth at the European Council meeting of last 29 June, which links access to the Internal Market to compliance with the Union’s four fundamental liberties.

The process leading up to the Brexit – said Minister Gentiloni – will have to take into consideration the acquired rights of European citizens, including those of a sizable number of Italians residing in the United Kingdom, which must be conceded on conditions of reciprocity with those of British citizens residing in Italy.
