Italy’s Development Cooperation gives one million euros to support efforts by ICRC and UNHCR in responding to Falluja’s humanitarian crisis

Italy’s Development Cooperation is supporting international efforts to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Fallujah and its surrounding area by granting two multilateral contributions for a total value of one million euros, of which 650,000 euros for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the remaining 350,000 euros for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to UN latest data, over 50,000 civilians still remain trapped inside Falluja, of which at least 20,000 children who are in very critical condition because of lack of food, water and medication.

Italy’s donation to the ICRC is meant to support relief operations the Committee is conducting through the distribution of food and emergency relief supplies to approx. 1.050 displaced families. The ICRC is also engaged in providing assistance and protection to the displaced living in camps, as well as supporting family reunification processes. Italy’s contribution to UNHCR will allow for the delivery of first aid kits to civilians fleeing Falluja and to displaced people from the besieged city going towards Amiriyat al-Falluja, located in the same Anbar Governatorate.
